First-time self-builders Angela and Simon couldn’t find their dream home within their budget, so decided to build it themselves. The result is a beautiful family home that lies in the historic market town of Royal Wootton Bassett in Wiltshire.

Project in Brief

Client: Angela and Simon Perry
Location: Royal Wootton Bassett
Project aim: To build a low-energy, aesthetically pleasing family home
Products used: BuildBetter Walling and BuildBetter Flooring

Angela and Simon had always wanted to design and build their own home and with a young family, decided it was the right time to build a home that met their family’s evolving needs.

At the beginning of their build journey they were self-proclaimed novices, learning the building skills they needed by searching the internet, watching YouTube videos and making lots of trips for the National Self Build and Renovation Centre.

Conscious of wanting to make the build as simple as possible, they were introduced to the idea of building with ICF and quickly arrived at the decision to use BuildBetter Flooring and BuildBetter Walling.

Now, they have a beautiful family home and are thrilled with the result they have achieved.

Angela and Simon’s Self-Build Journey:

“We always wanted to be able to build our own house and to build something that we could have sole design control over to meet our needs. We also knew that the house we wanted was out of our price range unless we built it ourselves.

When we started our project, our main goals were to build an aesthetically pleasing, low energy house with lots of space for our family. We also wanted to be offgrid for our oil consumption. As complete novices, with only home decorating experience, we also wanted to keep the build as simple as possible.

Early design for front of house

We visited the National Renovation and House Building Centre in Swindon many times where, in keeping with our desire to keep things simple, we decided to use an insulated raft design for our foundation. We also liked the insulating properties of using it in conjunction with ICF walls so decided to use the two together. The interlocking base of BuildBetter Flooring and BuildBetter Walling perimeter blocks eliminate any chance of cold bridging so also fit with our low-energy goal.

Our house has two storeys, with four bedrooms, two with en-suites and built-in dressing rooms, an open-plan living area, a separate playroom for the kids, and a grown-up living room for us to hide in!

The exterior is part clad in cedar wood and part rendered with brick slips to hip height. The roof is Spanish slate and is only of the only part of the build where we used a professional to come and cut the roof and lay the tiles.

While we hope the airtightness properties of our home mean we won’t really need it, we installed underfloor heating on both floors, powered by a Stiebel Elton air source heat pump. We wanted to install it just in case…and in going for an air source heat pump, we think we’ve made the most economical choice as it can pump out 4-5 times the amount of energy it uses.

Now we’re reaching the end of our build, we’re delighted with the result!”
